Volume +32.9%, Liquidity -12.6%: Pools Are Thinning

2026-09-07 · 5 min read · By Leo Park · BigPump Blog
TL;DR
  • Seven tokens on both boards: volume +32.9%, liquidity -12.6%
  • $PONS liquidity -30.7% while volume rose 153.5% — money passing through
  • $PAIR is the only name growing liquidity, volume and price without concentration worsening

Put the Sep 6 and Sep 7 snapshots side by side and one specific thing happened on Robinhood Chain: the same basket of tokens traded 32.9% more volume while their liquidity fell 12.6%.

Money is moving faster through shallower pools. For anyone trading memecoins here, that translates into something concrete: every move over the next few days gets amplified, and your slippage gets more expensive. Snapshot: Sep 7, 2026, 00:08 UTC (compared with Sep 6, 2026, 00:09 UTC).

The methodology, stated up front

The trending board rotates daily, so comparing "yesterday's twelve" against "today's twelve" is not an apples-to-apples measurement. I'm only comparing the seven tokens that appear on both days: $CHUMP, $SHRUB, $ROBIN, $PONS, $PAIR, $AI, $SHROOM.

Same-basket totals across two snapshots (~00:0x UTC)
MetricSep 6, 2026Sep 7, 2026Change
24h volume, combined$67,687,256$89,964,203+32.9%
Liquidity, combined$36,491,300$31,886,279-12.6%

For scale only (different baskets, so read it loosely): yesterday's twelve traded $114,420,440 combined; today's twelve traded $154,769,719.

The structure is unambiguous:

The chain-wide view

GeckoTerminal's Robinhood Chain page reports 9.81M transactions and $2.55B of volume over 24 hours, -2.73% versus the prior day.

Reading the two together is the interesting part: chain-wide volume is slightly down while hot-memecoin volume is up. Activity is concentrating into a handful of speculative names rather than the whole chain expanding. It's the continuation of the rotation I documented on Sep 6 in Chain volume -33.5%, yet 10 of 12 tokens closed green.

Three concrete consequences of thinner pools

1. Slippage gets more expensive, non-linearly

In a constant-product pool, price impact scales with your order size relative to the reserve. Take 30% out of the pool and the same order costs roughly 43% more in slippage.

Concretely for $PONS (x·y=k estimate, excluding taxes and fees): a $10,000 buy costs about 0.81% into today's $4,948,345 pool versus about 0.56% into yesterday's $7,143,480. Small — until your size grows. At $50,000, it becomes 4.08% versus 2.82%.

2. Both directions get amplified

The two largest 24h moves on today's board — $SHRUB at +369.63% and $SIRIUS at -43.49% — sit on pools of $755,594 and $118,218. The deepest pool on the board, $AI at $21,098,223, moved only -16.45%. That isn't a coincidence, it's arithmetic.

3. "Looks busy" may just be the same money circling

$PONS turned over 10.8x today, $MEME 27.8x, $BELL 109.9x. High turnover against falling liquidity usually means short-term capital cycling in and out, not fresh capital arriving. Rising volume is not evidence of new money. To check for new money, watch liquidity and holder count — not volume.

How to trade a thinning tape

  1. Cut your per-order size. When pools shrink broadly, the same position costs more to enter and exit. Rule of thumb: keep one order under 1% of pool TVL.
  2. Favor tokens where liquidity is rising. Today that's $SHRUB (+129.8%), $PAIR (+67.8%), $ROBIN (+51.8%). But cross-check against concentration — rising liquidity plus falling top-10 share can mean a large holder building an exit runway, which is what $ROBIN is doing today.
  3. Avoid high-turnover names with falling liquidity. $PONS is the textbook case: liquidity -30.7%, volume +153.5%, price -5.23%. The money is just passing through.
  4. Be stricter on new launches. An average new pool today holds $5,382. At that depth a few hundred dollars already moves the price.
  5. Add "liquidity change" to your daily checklist. Most people track price and volume. Liquidity direction is the number that tells you where capital is actually going.

Two observations worth keeping

One: $PAIR is the only token on today's board that's clean on all three axes. Liquidity +67.8%, volume +95.4%, price +83.63%, holders 6,511 → 9,805, top-10 at just 25.1%, turnover 2.6x (healthy range), market cap ÷ liquidity of 10.4x (low). Liquidity and volume growing together with concentration not deteriorating — that's what genuine new money looks like.

Two: $SHROOM is the quietest name and deserves the most caution. It's +1.93% on the day, which looks like nothing happening. Underneath: liquidity -26.3%, volume -64.1%, 1h tape of 41 buys against 82 sells. Absence of volatility is not absence of risk. Capital leaving quietly is still capital leaving.

FAQ

Why not just measure total chain liquidity?

Because our data package covers the trending board and new launches, not a full-chain census. Restricting the comparison to a fixed basket removes the distortion from board rotation — it's the most honest measurement available from this data. The chain-wide figures are sourced from GeckoTerminal.

Is falling liquidity automatically bearish?

It's bad for traders (worse slippage, bigger swings) but it isn't a directional call. $PONS lost a third of its pool and the price only fell 5.23%. Liquidity answers "can I get in and out cleanly," not "will it go up."

How do I track this myself?

Liquidity is displayed for every token on the BigPump hot-token board. The dumb-but-effective method: record the liquidity of the tokens you follow at the same time each day and watch the direction. Our daily report runs this comparison every morning.

What were today's golden dogs?

Four: $SHRUB +369.63%, $BELL +169.17%, $AOBS +135.82%, $ROBIN +104.82%. Individual reads in today's hot tokens report. If you'd rather launch a token than chase one, BigPump's launcher requires no initial liquidity from you before graduation — mechanics at book.bigpump.ai.
